“Brienz/Brinzauls Berg Slide: Current Situation and Blue Phase Preparation”

The municipality of Albula/Alvra provided information on the current situation in Brienz/Brinzauls in an information bulletin on Friday morning. It is said that the next phase, the blue phase, is not imminent and the red phase still applies.

“On the ‘island’, speeds are still increasing,” write those responsible. Sliding speeds up the mountain would also have increased, most notably high above Vazerol. According to the Bulletin, experts suspect that this is related to the precipitation of the past few weeks. From experience, the increase due to precipitation will calm down again as soon as the weather becomes drier.

Community leadership prepares phase blue
According to the Bulletin, when the island is about to be demolished (a day to a few hours) and it becomes apparent that a large part of the island will demolish, the blue phase begins.

Then the cantonal roads from Tiefencastel to Lenzerheide (between Tiefencastel and Vazerol) and from Tiefencastel to Filisur/Davos (between Tiefencastel and Surava) will be closed. The Rhaetian Railway’s Albula line will also not be accessible between Tiefencastel and Filisur.

In Surava, the two westernmost houses are also being evacuated.

The blue phase would also have an impact on schools. The upper school in Tiefencastel is switching to distance learning at short notice. The primary school children from Brienz/Brinzauls go to school in Lantsch/Lenz.

Outside of the “island”, there are currently no areas of the Berg slide that are at risk of demolition. Since Easter, however, the “island” has been slipping faster and faster and it must be expected that up to two million cubic meters will break off.

If the “island” breaks off above Brienz/Brienzauls, three scenarios are likely, according to experts.
