Britain’s “Museum for the Whole World” is in ruins – art

The scandal surrounding the missing British Museum (BM) collection pieces sold on ebay is spreading. Last week, the venerable institution suggested that the theft was only noticed this year. Emails available to the BBC now show that two and a half years ago, since February 2021, the museum leadership around the German director Hartwig Fischer had detailed information that weighed heavily on a chief curator. But it was only when the whistleblower contacted the supervisory board that the investigation started to move. Former Labor Secretary of Culture Ben Bradshaw believes that the reputation of the world-renowned “museum for the whole world,” as the museum likes to praise itself, is at stake.
