A fast-moving wildfire in western Canada has more than doubled in size since Friday, occupying over 53 square miles in British Columbia and forcing thousands to flee. Officials declared a state of emergency as intense flames generated their own lightning and trapped residents.
A state of emergency has been declared across British Columbia after the Bald Range fire expanded rapidly through western Canada, according to the BC Wildfire Service. First detected on Friday, the fast-moving blaze has grown to occupy more than 53 square miles, spanning across Summerland, Peachland, and surrounding areas. Thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as the inferno intensifies dramatically with little warning.
Evacuations and Dramatic Escapes in Summerland
The entire Summerland area has been placed under evacuation orders alongside communities in nearby regions. British Columbia Premier David Eby told a news conference on Saturday that a fire official likened the blaze to a bomb going off
. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes told Reuters that authorities stated they had to brace themselves for the worst as crews battle the flames.
Residents described terrifying, last-minute escapes as conditions shifted abruptly. Keegan Radomski, a Summerland local, evacuated her property just moments before the fire reached it, fleeing alongside seven others on Friday. Radomski stated that was right by their house in a video shared with the BBC, capturing burning tree tops just over a hill beyond her escape route. She remains unable to return, waiting anxiously to learn if her home survived. According to Radomski, neighbours who stayed behind reported that many homes on their street have already burned down.
Fire-Created Weather Systems and Special Provincial Powers
Officials reported that the wildfire grew so intensely that the flames generated their own weather systems, which in turn produced lightning. The rapid escalation trapped some individuals as conditions changed, requiring emergency rescues. Premier Eby noted that homes have been lost and properties destroyed across the affected zones.
The declaration of a state of emergency grants the provincial government special powers. These measures include travel restrictions, supply protections designed to prevent price gouging, and extra resources needed to coordinate ongoing rescue operations.
Impact on Peachland and Vulnerable Care Facilities
Summerland, home to approximately 12,000 residents, and parts of Peachland, which houses about 6,500 people, represent some of the hardest-hit areas. Earl Kurz, a 30-year Peachland resident, recalled being out on Okanagan Lake with his wife on Friday afternoon when clear blue skies rapidly turned hazy grey. Kurz noted that they had been on evacuation alert many times, adding that it was the first time they were actually evacuated.
Interior Health, a publicly funded health authority in British Columbia, coordinated the relocation of hundreds of residents from Summerland care facilities, including senior housing, to safer areas. Evacuation orders and alerts have been issued by the regional districts of Central Okanagan and Okanagan-Similkameen, the Snpink’tn Indian Band, and the districts of Summerland and Peachland.
Struggles to Save Livestock and Animals
Beyond human evacuations, the crisis has heavily impacted local livestock. In Okanagan, residents have struggled to evacuate large numbers of horses, according to Canadian broadcaster CBC. Owners unable to move their animals left pasture gates open in the hope that the horses would find their own path to safety, while others painted identifying markings directly onto the animals to make them easier to recognize later.
The disaster unfolds during a severe summer for Canadian wildfires. Nearly 200 fires burned in Ontario in July alone, degrading air quality in Toronto to some of the worst levels worldwide and sending smoke drifting into parts of the United States, including Minnesota and New York.
