British Ship Rubymar Sinks in Red Sea – Impact on Environment and Gaza Crisis

2024-03-02 22:01:46

The Rubymar, a British ship attacked in the Red Sea by the Houthis last month, sank on Saturday March 2, 2024, Yemen’s government said, warning of an “environmental catastrophe” due to the ship’s cargo which was carrying fertilizer.

If confirmed, it would be the first boat sunk since the Houthis began targeting commercial shipping in November, forcing shipping companies to divert ships to the longer and more expensive route that bypasses Africa.

The British Maritime Trade Operations Agency (UKMTO) reported the sinking of a ship on Saturday, but did not identify it. The crew were able to be evacuated in time.

Request for aid for Gaza

A senior Houthi leader said Saturday that he held British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his government responsible for the sinking of the Rubymar, but that they might refloat the bulk carrier “by allowing aid trucks into Gaza.”

The Iran-backed Houthis, who control northern Yemen and other major centers, say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
