BOSTON — The Vegas Golden Knights gave Bruce Cassidy a successful comeback in Boston, with Reilly Smith scoring in the fifth round of shootout to give them a 4-3 win over the Bruins on Monday night.

By winning, the Golden Knights ended the winning streak of the Bruins, who had won their first 14 games of the season at home. It was an NHL record for a season start.

The 57-year-old Cassidy was fired by the Bruins in June, after five and a half seasons, following the team’s first-round playoff elimination to the Carolina Hurricanes. Eight days later, the Golden Knights hired him.

In a duel featuring two of the league’s top three teams, the Golden Knights took a 3-0 lead early in the second period. Paul Cotter scored two of those goals, the other going to Jonathan Marchessault.

The Bruins then began their comeback when Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak hit the target just over six minutes apart late in the second period.

The Bruins tied the score thanks to Taylor Hall on the power play at 3:08 of the third period.

Smith beat Jeremy Swayman for the only goal in the shootout when he .

The Bruins’ streak at home allowed them to erase the record first set by the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1963-64 season and then tied by the Florida Panthers last season.

Before the shootout, Logan Thompson blocked 40 shots in front of the Golden Knights’ goal. Swayman made 21 saves.
