Work has been going on in the multimedia ORF newsroom for over a year. It is now clear who will lead the editorial team at Küniglberg from today, Friday. Johannes Bruckenberger, Gabriele Waldner-Pammesberger and Sebastian Prokop will take over the editor-in-chief as a trio, the ORF announced in a broadcast. Bruckenberger takes over the management of the broadcast and platform teams, Waldner-Pammesberger those of the multimedia specialist departments and Prokop takes care of the news teams.
The three journalists formally report to ORF General Director Roland Weißmann. However, the ORF boss is only to be involved in the decision-making process if no agreement is reached between them or if one of the editorial leaders wishes this. As part of journalistic independence, no instructions may still be given. The editor-in-chief and both editors-in-chief are supposed to represent the newsroom to the outside world and coordinate information offerings, breaking news introductions and resources across all platforms and programs.
Breaking news, the ORF’s online platforms, short information formats, data journalism, verification, user-generated content and social media are located at the news team’s editor-in-chief. Contributions can also be prepared for other platforms in coordination with departments and broadcast teams. Two of the three members of the new editor-in-chief have known the ORF for many years: Waldner-Pammesberger joined ORF radio in 1996 and later took over as deputy. Johannes Bruckenberger has no ORF experience to date. He comes to the country’s largest media company from outside. With his decision, Weißmann corresponded to the non-binding vote of the ORF journalists in five out of six cases. Only Christian Braun-Staudinger was not ranked first by the editors. Instead of him, in the opinion of the ORF journalists, the long-time Germany correspondent and now ORF correspondent coordinator Birgit Schwarz should have served as deputy. should act as editor-in-chief for the multimedia departments.
