MEPs from all sides denounce the gas agreement between the EU and Azerbaijan

About sixty elected officials from all sides, including the president of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Renaud Muselier, and the leader of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, call on the EU on Friday to ” to renouncer “ to the agreement reached with Azerbaijan to double gas imports, denouncing the “warlike aspirations” from this country.

“This initiative continues the frantic race towards the exploitation of the resources of our planet [et] places the European Union in a situation of new dependence on a State with bellicose aspirations”say the signatories of a forum published in our columns. According to them, the Caucasus country “also participates in the frantic race for arms funding that is exterminating the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh or in the Republic of Armenia”.

The text is notably signed by the national secretary of Europe Ecology-The Greens, Julien Bayou, the “rebellious” Clémentine Autain, the MEP Les Républicains François-Xavier Bellamy, the MEP environmentalist Yannick Jadot, the mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan (left union), or even Senator LR Bruno Retailleau.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on July 18, in Baku, the conclusion of an agreement with Azerbaijan to double ” in a few years “ EU gas imports from this former Soviet republic in the Caucasus.

For the signatories of this forum, this agreement constitutes “moreover a response from the past, contrary to ecological transition commitments and the requirement for greener energy for a more sovereign European Union”.
