The Brussels inner ring road was closed on Monday for around two hours due to a serious accident between a car and a truck, which occurred around 4:15 a.m. near Zaventem, the Flemish traffic center (Vlaams Verkeerscentrum) reported. The accident, which occurred shortly following exit 3/Zaventem luchthaven (airport), left one dead and two seriously injured, the emergency services said.

The victims were all in the car. It was the driver who died instantly. The injured were taken to hospital. The ring had to be completely closed following the collision, causing lines around ten kilometers long. Around 6:30 a.m., the roadway was reopened.

However, rush hour traffic remained chaotic there and elsewhere, particularly due to the rainy weather. Thus on the E19 near Zemst (Flemish Brabant), another accident involving a heavy goods vehicle and a car occurred around 6:15 a.m. in the direction of Brussels. The car hit the truck which was on the emergency lane. It ended up in a scissor and was losing fuel. Only the left lane was still accessible to traffic.
