Brussels Low Emissions Zone: Fines, Rules, and Future Changes

Nearly 30,000 drivers (29,643) received fines, an increase of almost 60% compared to 2022. Anyone driving in the area with a vehicle that pollutes too much is liable to a fine of 350 euros.

Low emissions zone: 30% less pollution on major roads

LEZ rules, which were tightened on January 1, 2022, prohibit access to the zone for diesel vehicles that meet Euro 4 or lower, as well as gasoline cars that meet Euro 1 or lower. Euro 4 standard diesels, however, benefited from a warning period until June 30, instead of a fine. This notice period has led to a limited number of tickets in 2022.

However, due to tougher rules, the number of fines increased significantly last year. In 2020, 12,321 fines were distributed, compared to 16,642 in 2021. A motorist can only be fined once every three months (per quarter). Also note that overly polluting vehicles with a foreign registration plate are not subject to a fine if they enter the LEZ.

The next important step in strengthening the Brussels LEZ is planned for January 1, 2025. From this date, Euro 5 diesel vehicles and Euro 2 gasoline vehicles will be prohibited in the territory. Mopeds, motorcycles and trucks will also no longer be welcome from 2025.
