Comments by Bernard Clerfayt sparked an outcry on Friday in its majority. The PS and Ecolo have denounced the words of the Brussels Minister of Employment, about the employment of women. He attributed the bad figures in the capital to a “Mediterranean model” which would be significant in communities of foreign origin. “Many women are still in a Mediterranean model, whether they are Italians, Moroccans or Turks of origin. This morning, he maintains that “if the employment rate for women is much lower in Brussels than the rate for men, a little more than in the other regions, it is mainly because the rate of participation in the labor market for women, and mainly women of foreign origin is much lower than that of men, so that reflects the realities. If we want to achieve an employment rate of 80%, which is an objective that we have set ourselves in Belgium, it obviously we have to help more women, and those who are already present on the job market, to find a job”.
He recongnizes “that there are also issues of discrimination, against which we are fighting in the Brussels region, and training issues to be adapted to the demands of employers”. Bernard Clerfayt wishes to clarify: “my speech did not talk about the difficulties of obtaining a job for a series of women. On these issues, we are strongly involved with Actiris, the employment agency, so that everyone is coached, helped, accompanied to have the training that allows them to respond to job applications and also actively fight against the discrimination that exists on the job market. I know how much it exists in Brussels, more than anywhere else. And we are the most active region on this”.
