Rudi Vervoort (PS), Minister-President of Brussels, was the guest of Thomas Gadisseux on Matin Première this Friday. Asked about the issue of ritual slaughter which has resurfaced in recent days, the socialist was firm.

Two months before the elections, the Reds fear the return to parliament of the highly sensitive issue of ritual slaughter. At the end of the day, the observation remained relevant. This Thursday, the Brussels government has now decided to entrust the file to the party presidents.

“I don’t want this debate now,” he said. “A vote took place two years ago, clear and democratic. To return to this issue is to pollute the debate,” he explains, arguing that he does not want to see the issue resurface before the elections.

“Our position is clear: we are not voting to ban ritual slaughter,” the socialist then indicated. “What we are asking is to respect a majority agreement,” adding that there are “much more important issues on the table.”

Thursday morning, Ecolo, member of the majority, launched a call to vote on the code as validated in government, without amendment. Objective: to ensure that the partners of the majority refrain from attempting to modify the text during its passage through parliament, in order to make progress on what is consensus.

In opposition, the MR deputy, Gaëtan Van Goidsenhoven deplored that “Brussels, the last region of the country to implement its animal welfare code, risks ending this legislature with nothing… especially since for several years, parliamentary initiatives aimed at strengthening the protection of animals have been postponed in view of the advent of the code.

“After having sacrificed nature with, among other things, the saga of the Josaphat wasteland, today it is the animals who are hostage to the divisions and inconsistencies of a Brussels government running out of steam. This is lamentable on the eve of the inclusion of animal welfare in the Constitution,” added the man who is also president of the animal protection society Veeweyde.

For its part, the GAIA association described the situation as “scandalous” and a “denial of democracy”. The animal protection association asked “socialist elected officials, from all walks of life, to call the Brussels PS to reason”.
