Brussels owners are not happy who have seen their property tax increase sharply. They are so angry that they are going to call on the 9 municipalities which have applied a sharp increase. This decision was taken this Thursday during a meeting organized at the headquarters of the National Union of Owners and Co-owners (SNPC) where the room was packed!

Owners will submit citizen inquiries to the municipal councils of each municipality that has increased taxes.

“The owners will submit citizen inquiries to the municipal councils of each municipality that has increased taxes. This is the first time that citizens will demand accountability from their elected officials on municipal revenues and the use that will be made of them. this new financial windfall”, underlines the press release published this Thursday. “In all the municipalities, drop-off boxes will be sent to collect signatures,” explains Olivier de Clippele, President of the Brussels regional SNPC. Of the 18,000 members of the SNPC, there are already more than 1,000 who want to react.

Property tax: “It is abnormal that a tax is used to fill the coffers of Brussels municipalities”

“Anomalies”

The municipalities targeted are Anderlecht, Forest, Ganshoren, Ixelles, Molenbeek Saint-Jean, Saint-Gilles, Schaerbeek and Watermael-Boitsfort. Forest holds the record with an increase of 28%, ahead of Anderlecht (+18.5%), Ixelles (+17%), Molenbeek (+16%) and Saint-Gilles (+13%). “For Ixelles, the increase represents a total amount of 16.5 million euros. Why is so much money needed” asks Olivier de Clippele. Municipal elected officials will therefore have to explain why they need so much revenue while other municipalities such as Koekelberg, Saint-Josse, Auderghem or Woluwe-Saint-Lambert have not or only slightly increased their property tax. “There are anomalies.”

Olivier de Clippele is, however, aware that this protest will not allow a reversal. “We don’t know how to go to the Council of State,” he admits. But this should still serve as a warning sent to political leaders one year before the municipal elections.
