Brussels Police Union Fights Against Drug-Related Violence: Union’s Perspective on Lack of Resources and Safety Concerns

If Mr. Close estimated that the Brussels Capital/Ixelles police zone was particularly motivated to fight against violence linked to the drug scene, the union does not share the enthusiasm. “He says that we are going to fight, that everything is fine, but we are short of personnel,” the head of well-being within the CGSP Police section of the area, Valérie Leclercq, told Belga. “We have neither the time nor the manpower to fight drugs in the Brussels neighborhoods, that’s a lie. Mr Close’s optimism is very shocking to staff.”

The union organization has already called on the territorial director of the zone to “put an end to solitary patrols by police officers not trained in this exercise”, but without success. “The territorial authority persists in sending these inspectors alone in uniform on the streets, exposing them to the risks linked to multiple criminal phenomena to compensate for the lack of structural staff,” she lamented.

A meeting bringing together all the trade union organizations is planned for February 29, ahead of a consultation committee. “We are facing a drop in troop morale. We quickly need more resources to ensure the safety of citizens.”
