2023-10-17 00:09:20

Two people died Monday evening in Brussels following gunfire not far from Place Sainctelette, police said.

According to the first known elements, the shots were fired around 7:15 p.m. near Place Sainctelette, Boulevard d’Ypres and Boulevard du Ninième de ligne. The emergency services arrived in large numbers on the scene. No suspect has yet been arrested.

The spokesperson for the federal prosecutor’s office provided details around 11 p.m. Three people were targeted by the attacker, two Swedish supporters who died and a taxi driver who is now out of danger.

The federal emergency phase was triggered and the case was taken over by the prosecution, for the “potentially terrorist” nature of the attack.

The prosecution confirms that the attacker is still on the run.
