“Brussels Terraces Hit by High-Speed Van: Arrest Made and Charges Filed”

2023-05-08 15:21:00

A white van had moved at high speed, on August 26, around 1:00 p.m., towards two terraces located rue Saint-Michel in Brussels, an axis perpendicular to rue Neuve. Six people were slightly injured. While he had fled, the driver was arrested in the followingnoon, around 4:00 p.m., in Antwerp, where one of his sisters lived. His home in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode had been searched.

He was then placed under arrest warrant and charged with attempted murder. Immediately following the events, it was thought that the man had acted for a terrorist motive, but this hypothesis was quickly ruled out. It was also suggested that the individual had felt frustrated due to the new Brussels mobility plan which now limits access to certain streets in the city center to one direction of traffic. This possibility has also been disputed.
