Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced early on Tuesday that the day after the shooting in the streets of Brussels, the suspect is still being sought by the authorities.

Belgian authorities are still searching this Tuesday morning for the man who killed at least two people in the streets of Brussels on Monday during a “cowardly” terrorist attack, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said at a press conference. The suspect, a “man of Tunisian origin who was staying illegally” in Belgium “has not yet been arrested,” he announced.

Because the suspect is still being sought, the authorities “have decided to raise the threat level to level 4 (the maximum, editor’s note) throughout the Brussels-Capital region”, continued Alexander De Croo.

“Maximum vigilance”

The police presence in the Brussels region will therefore be “reinforced” with “reinforced security measures” in “sensitive” places, particularly those linked to the Swedish community.

“We ask everyone present in the capital to exercise maximum vigilance,” Alexander De Croo also said.

“This terrible attack” took place Monday, at the end of the day, near Place Sainctelette, on Boulevard d’Ypres, less than two kilometers from the historic center of Brussels.

Two people of Swedish nationality were killed by an armed man who fled on a scooter. The federal prosecutor’s office, responsible for terrorism cases, was seized of the investigation. Only one individual is being sought, according to initial information.

“This is a man of Tunisian origin who was staying illegally in our country,” said Alexander De Croo. “This man attacked two Swedes. He shot them with a weapon of war. A third person is currently seriously injured and is recovering.”

The two victims were supporters of their national team, which faced the Belgian national team at the Roi Beaudoin stadium, as part of the qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship. The match, suspended at half-time, was finally interrupted.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen denounced a “despicable attack”, while French President Emmanuel Macron deplored an “Islamist terrorist attack”. France has announced a strengthening of its border controls.
