The son of a suspected contract killer is arrested. This then leads to a brutal attempt at liberation by a notorious cartel.

At least 12 suspected criminals have been killed in police crossfire in a foiled attempt to free the son of a Sinaloa cartel hit man. Seven others escaped, some of them probably injured, the Sonora prosecutor’s office said Sunday.

Two security officers were taken to hospital, but their condition is stable. 21 assault weapons, including AR-15s and AK-47s, chargers, bulletproof vests, camouflage clothing, six modern delivery trucks and a “significant” amount of ammunition were seized.

An attack on government officials was carried out on a country road between the state capital Hermosillo and Bahia de Kino on the Pacific coast on Saturday afternoon, but was repelled by security forces, the public prosecutor’s office said.

The group, armed with assault rifles, tried to free the son of Jesus Humberto Limon, a suspected hitman from a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel around the sons of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. He had been arrested a few minutes earlier in Camino del Seri for crimes against life and limb, it was said, without giving further details.
