Bukele will receive the credentials for his electoral victory on February 29 – 2024-02-27 19:25:20 – 2024-02-27 19:25:20 – 2024-02-27 19:27:29

The Supreme Electoral Court (SEC) of El Salvador agreed to deliver the credentials of his electoral victory to President Nayib Bukele and his vice president, Félix Ulloa, on February 29, even though it was scheduled to take place on Monday, February 26.

“This day in the Collegiate Body we agree to deliver on Thursday, February 29 of this year the credentials to the citizens elected as president and vice president of the Republic for the period 2024-2029, in a solemn ceremony at the National Theater,” the magistrate published Noel Orellana in X.

A TSE press liaison recently indicated that the delivery would take place on February 26, but the organization had neither made official nor denied this information.

The TSE has not communicated the reasons for the postponement of the delivery of credentials, which the electoral calendar stipulated to be done between February 19 and 26.

On February 18, the TSE ratified the victory of Nayib Bukele, of the ruling Nuevas Ideas (NI) party, in the presidential elections on February 4, which gave the current president 84.6% of the valid votes, more than 2.7 millions.

Bukele thus became the first president to be re-elected in El Salvador since the country became a democracy, despite the constitutional prohibition on immediate re-election.

Before Bukele, the dictator and military man Maximiliano Hernández Martínez, who governed between 1931 and 1944, had done so.

For its part, the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) obtained 204,167 votes (6.40%) and the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena) obtained 177,881 (5.57%).

6.2 million citizens were called to the February 4 elections, with a participation level of 52.60%.
