Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has declined to assign direct blame to Moscow for a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Instead, he argued that European shipments of long-range weapons to Ukraine are equally reckless.
Sofia Refuses to Isolate Leipzig Incident
The remarks from Sofia follow an August 4 incident where an explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicle was discovered parked between Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes at the German transport hub. Berlin stated earlier this week that it has grounds to suspect Russian involvement in the failed sabotage attempt.
That suspicion triggered diplomatic retaliations. Berlin closed the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin, while implementing heightened border controls for Russian citizens.
Moscow Dismisses Allegations as Diversion
Moscow rejected the allegations entirely.
President Vladimir Putin characterized the accusations as a diversionary tactic. He argued the claims aim to distract the German public from domestic economic difficulties.
Addressing parliament on Friday, Radev broke with several fellow European Union member states. He pointed to broader military actions rather than isolating the Leipzig airport event.
He stated that Kiev is utilizing Western-made weaponry, backed by European intelligence personnel and instructors, to execute strikes deep inside sovereign Russian territory.
Rhetorical Warnings on Uncontrolled Escalation
“And what can we expect when we attack deep inside another country with our long-range weapons? Will it stand by or will it respond?” Radev asked parliamentarians rhetorically.
The Bulgarian prime minister cautioned that Western persistence in pursuing a conventional military victory against a major nuclear-armed power drastically accelerates the danger of an uncontrolled escalation with Moscow.
Warning that Europe cannot sustain itself long-term in opposition to Russia, Radev urged the European Union to enter negotiations with Moscow immediately.
Domestic Pushback Emerges Within Germany
Meanwhile, domestic pushback has emerged within Germany against Berlin’s official response and broader diplomatic posture toward Russia.
Sahra Wagenknecht, a veteran left-wing politician, posted on X on Wednesday that even if Moscow were responsible, a drone causing no damage does not justify fueling a dangerous escalation that risks a full-scale war and millions of lives.
Skepticism from the Political Right
Similar skepticism came from the political right.
Ulrich Siegmund, the lead candidate for the Alternative for Germany party in Saxony-Anhalt, told the media outlet The Pioneer on Tuesday that a continuous sequence of events preceded the Leipzig airport incident.
Pointing to Germany’s deepening involvement in the conflict through weapons deliveries and economic sanctions, Siegmund argued that a reaction was logical. He urged Berlin to pursue earnest diplomacy with Moscow instead.
