bulk, an increasingly popular form of consumption

The month of March is dedicated to bulk, that is to say, it encourages consumption without packaging, in chosen quantities and in reusable containers. Today, three out of four supermarkets have their bulk department, which is progress, because five years ago only one out of two stores offered it to its customers.

From March 1 to 31, bulk is strongly encouraged in supermarkets and large areas. Bulk is this method of consumption which consists in reusing the containers of the products that we buy rather than buying them packaged, for example. This therefore also implies the possibility of choosing the desired quantity of the product that one wants.

Just as you can buy your pens individually, thanks to the bulk, it is possible to fill your perfume bottle or your detergent canister with the abundance of your choice. Bulk even allows you to buy your screws and nuts by weight, enough to avoid any unnecessary purchases. Another reason that encourages many to adopt this practice is that it represents a way of protecting the planet and the regulations support its development. By 2030, the largest supermarkets will have to offer 20% of their products in bulk.

Towards 100% bulk consumption?

But for Thomas Graffagnino, industry expert at SIA Partners, the traditional packaging of our good old packaged products is irreplaceable for marketing: “The reason for buying a brand also comes from the fact of the packaging. The brands, on the other hand, ask themselves what is the right model for them to can find their way in relation to the competition, the brand image and at the same time meet the demands of consumers in relation to this mode of consumption.

One thing is certain, bulk promises a wide expansion of its use, although we are still far from consuming 100% bulk for reasons of competitiveness and attractiveness.
