But there was a strike at the Spanish airline Iberia at the beginning of January

The Spanish airline Iberia is threatened with a strike by ground staff at the beginning of January. The unions CCOO and UGT had called on employees to strike for the days from January 5th to 8th and thus over the Epiphany on January 6th, which is particularly important in Spain, the unions announced on Friday.

It was only on Wednesday that the unions canceled a strike originally planned for New Year’s Eve and Epiphany because the government had offered to mediate. However, these negotiations did not lead to a result that was acceptable to the employee representatives, which is why the strike call has now been put back into effect for the days of January, the unions emphasized.

The background is that Iberia Airport Services, which is responsible for handling aircraft, lost almost all of its contracts for important Spanish airports to competitors in a tender in September, with the exception of Madrid-Barajas. This means that in the future it will no longer be responsible for handling aircraft from all airlines landing and taking off there. Around 7,000 employees fear that they will have to work under worse conditions for new licensees.

The unions want to ensure that Iberia at least takes over the handling of all aircraft of the airlines belonging to the parent company IAG – Iberia, British Airways, Level, Vueling, Aer Lingus and Air Nostrum – at the affected Spanish airports. Iberia rejected this for cost reasons.
