Protecting Your Kids Online: Tips and Tools for Parents in the Digital Age

As the holidays approach, the latest tech gadgets often top wish lists for children. While these devices can be fun and educational, experts warn parents to proceed with caution, emphasizing the importance of digital safety. Sarah Grado, Chief Programs Officer at the non-profit organization Not My Kid, stresses the potential negative impact of early introduction to technology.

“We often see parents wanting to buy devices, especially those with internet access, for very young children,” explains Grado. “At notMYkid, we strongly advocate for delaying device ownership as long as possible.”

Grado highlights the detrimental effects of digital algorithms and endless scrolling, which can have serious consequences for a child’s mental health.

“It’s crucial for parents to understand that these platforms are designed to be addictive,” she says. “Constant exposure can lead to unhealthy behaviors and a distorted sense of reality.”

But don’t despair – there are many tools available to help parents navigate the digital world safely.

“We encourage parents to look into parental controls, whether it’s built into the device itself, offered through their carrier, or third-party apps like Bark. It’s about monitoring usage and setting limits on screen time,” says Grado.

She recommends enabling location services and utilizing apps like Life360 for peace of mind.

“Being able to know your child’s whereabouts can be incredibly reassuring,” explains Grado.

Creating designated device-free zones, such as during family meals or in the car, can also help encourage meaningful conversations and quality time together.

“Car rides are powerful opportunities for connection,” shares Grado. “Since kids are physically ‘stuck’ with parents in the car, they often open up more easily.”

However, even with these safeguards, online dangers still lurk. Don’t let guard down when it comes to online predators, especially with the recent surge in sextortion, a disturbing trend targeting boys.

“We’re seeing more boys finding themselves entangled in these situations.

They think they’re communicating with a girl, but it’s actually a predator who then uses that information, often intimate content, to manipulate the child for money or other exploitative purposes,” explains Grado.

“It’s dire that parents and teens alike understand the risks and prioritize open, honest conversations about online safety. Kids need to know they can always turn to trusted adults for help.”

For parents, the key is a multi-pronged approach: setting firm boundaries, staying informed about online trends, and maintaining open communication with their children. Not My Kid offers resources and support for parents navigating these challenges, including prevention education and support programs for families facing a range of issues including substance abuse and mental health concerns. Talking early and often is essential when it comes to protecting young people in the digital age
