BVB, News: Problems with financial supervision

The financial supervisory authority BaFin has identified three errors worth millions in the 2018 annual financial statements at Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA. The

“In the consolidated financial statements of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA as of June 30, 2018, sales are overstated by EUR 223 million because the company received transfer payments from the transfer of football players for which a transfer payment made in previous years was capitalized as an intangible asset , recognized as revenue,” the statement said on Thursday.

The figures show that BVB would have overestimated the turnover of 536 million euros by a whopping 41 percent.

According to the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, this violates the International Accounting Standard (lAS) 38.118, “according to which the difference between the net sales proceeds and the book value of the intangible asset is to be recognized as profit or loss from derecognition, but a profit is not to be reported as sales. It follows that the gross proceeds from the sale – here in the form of the transfer payments received – are not to be reported as revenue.”
