After many years as restaurant manager at Mraz & Sohn, Peggy Strobel fulfilled her dream of opening her own café. Gastro.News visited the cafetière to find out more.

“I’ve been looking for something of my own for a long time, but just couldn’t find the right address. Until a friend told me that a successor was being sought for Café Naber. Of course I took the chance and got in touch immediately. You could say the café was waiting for me,” says the friendly hostess Peggy Strobel. It was opened on June 1st, 2023, but the restaurateur would not consider doing everything new. “The company is a piece of Viennese tradition. The technology has been modernized, but the cozy atmosphere does not need to be changed. I’m happy to be able to offer contemporary coffee in a traditional ambience,” explains the cafetiere.

From cappuccino to classic espresso to melange, everything that coffee lovers in the city appreciate is on offer. But also ice chocolate and iced buggies can be found on the menu. “We make our vanilla ice cream and lemonades in-house. Exactly a few snacks ideal for an aperitif. I am supported in this regard by my partner Markus Mraz, who was also able to prove himself as a craftsman here,” says Strobel with a smile. The guests of the “new old” café can also enjoy a small but fine wine list, champagne and Aperol Spritz. In addition to fresh pastries, there is also the legendary ham and cheese toast from the home Mraz.

The cafetière has eight seats in the guest room and another eight in front of the restaurant in the small sidewalk café. Perfect for the warm summer months. “Wipplingerstrasse has developed tremendously, which makes me all the happier with the location of my café. There’s a lot going on in the area, but it’s not overcrowded,” says Strobel. There is also a beautiful showroom at the rear of the establishment which guests can use to try out some unique chairs and sofas. The harmonious atmosphere, the feel-good ambience and the warmth of the hostess make the cafetière one of the most beautiful cafés in Vienna. The visitors see it that way too. “We have already won the first regular guests who have been enjoying their coffee with us almost every day since we opened. It’s a good idea to continue like this,” concludes the restaurateur.
