The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) launched a pilot program enabling Californians to upload their driver’s license to their smartphones.
“It is called a mobile driver’s license and because it is in its first phase it only offers certain benefits,” explained Steve Gordon, director of the DMV.
The digital license can be used as an identification card to verify your age in stores enrolled in the True Age program and as a boarding pass for TSA pre-checking on domestic flights.
It is accepted at the international airports of San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles along with 26 others including Denver, Phoenix, Miami and Salt Lake.
“It makes it easier for me because my whole world, my work is the cell phone. I really have my debit card there, I would like to have the license to simplify everything once and for all and leave it on my cell phone,” said Miguel González, a resident of San José.
But today the digital license cannot be used for banking transactions nor does it replace the physical document.
The DMV assures that you must be clear that for now the police authorities are not accepting this digital identification so when you go to drive you must have your wallet and your physical license with you.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE DIGITAL LICENSE
You must download the application on your cell phone through take a photo of the front and back of your license and wait for the authorization of your digital document.
Although this tool could simplify life for many, there are users who are distrustful since their data could be exposed.
“Because you never know, there are people doing things and for your own safety, no,” said Sonia Schubert, a resident of San José.
However, the DMV assures that the app does not track location or other user data, and that it is only activated for 30 seconds to avoid further exposure.
Currently 100,000 people have already activated the application but the test is enabled for one and a half million for free.
