California only wants non-combustion engines by 2035

California only wants to allow the sale of electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles from 2035 and has asked the government in Washington for permission. A letter dated Monday from the responsible California Air Resources Board (CARB) to the Federal Environmental Protection Agency EPA was available to Archyde.com. According to this, from 2026 onwards, annually increasing specifications for zero-emission vehicles should end the sale of purely petrol-powered cars by 2035.

“These vehicles will permanently displace emissions from conventional vehicles,” wrote CARB chief Steven Cliff. An EPA spokesman said it would review the application.

More than 39 million people live in California. The regulations of the US state for the auto industry are correspondingly important. The rules aim to reduce emissions from light commercial vehicles by a quarter by 2037. The regulations stipulate that by 2026, 35 percent of new cars sold will be plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), electric cars or vehicles with hydrogen fuel cells.

This proportion is to increase to 68 percent by 2030 and to 100 percent by 2035. President Joe Biden’s administration has not yet set a date for an end to sales of all-gasoline vehicles.
