Call for applications: Arnold Schönberg grants for composition 2023 – mica

On the occasion of Arnold Schönberg’s 150th birthday in 2024, the Federal Ministry for Art, Culture, Public Service and Sport is awarding a total of three anniversary grants for musical composition in 2023. Submission period: from now until April 15, 2023.

In the course of the scholarship, a compositional work for string quartet with a duration of approx. 12 minutes is to be created.

The three scholarships are awarded on the recommendation of an independent jury to people who have completed a music degree or who have been working full-time as musicians for many years. Further criteria within the framework of the jury assessment are: compositional ability, stylistic independence, innovation potential, outstanding quality of previous artistic achievements, as well as the performability and reception value of the work. Eligible to participate are natural persons who have Austrian citizenship or reside in Austria. The term of each of the scholarships, which is endowed with EUR 1,500.00 per month, is three months.

The funded compositions should be made available to the Arnold-Schönberg-Center by December 2023 at the latest, as they are scheduled to be premiered as part of the anniversary events in 2024. The selected scholarship holders agree to make their work for string quartet with a duration of approx. 12 minutes, created within the framework of the scholarship, available for a one-time performance without additional payment.

The complete application documents contain:

  1. Completed general funding application form with name, address, telephone number, date of birth and bank details
    ➢ Signing with mobile phone signature/citizen card
    ➢ or send the funding application form by post with your original signature.
  2. copy of the current one Report seats
  3. One clear description of the compositional project
  4. CV with information about previous artistic or compositional activities
  5. Current Worklists (or selection)
  6. work samples: Scores (PDF) or sound samples in the form of links to material available on the Internet

The scholarship holders are proposed by a qualified jury in free evaluation. The participants will be informed in writing of the jury result. It is pointed out that there is no verbal justification for the jury’s proposal. Submissions after the specified submission deadline and incomplete applications cannot be considered for a scholarship.

Unless otherwise specified in the award, acceptance of the grant entails the obligation, no later than three months after the end of the grant, to submit a documented report to the responsible department of the ministry on the work carried out during the period of the grant and, if possible, copies of the to submit the work.

Furthermore, it is pointed out that – in the event that a scholarship is awarded – no further scholarships from the BMKÖS can be obtained in the same period. Persons who will already receive a state scholarship for composition in 2023 are therefore excluded from the application.
