Is it legal?

As the VRT explains, the law of June 30, 1994 indicates that it is necessary to systematically ask the authorization of a person before filming it. Another law indicates, however, that surveillance cameras can be installed if you want to prevent thefts or accidents. But the measure must be proportionate and justifiable.

In 2019, the Data Protection Authority concluded that “the installation of cameras in such spaces where the persons concerned are necessarily subject to the surveillance of a camera for the entire duration of their presence constitutes a disproportionate breach of the privacy of students and their visitors.”

Installing a camera to avoid crimes is therefore authorized, but it must not be intended to verify the actions of students. They cannot be installed in private spaces either: bedroom, bathroom… In any case, the presence of cameras must be announced and the images cannot be stored or broadcast.
