Cameron: Britain’s support for Israel is conditional

London – British Foreign Secretary David Cameron stressed that his country’s support for Israel is not unconditional, hoping that Tel Aviv will adhere to international humanitarian law.

Cameron’s statement came in an article he published in the Sunday Times newspaper, on Sunday, on the occasion of the six-month anniversary of the Israeli attacks on Gaza.

The British Minister touched on the Israeli bombing that targeted workers of the World Central Kitchen Organization, and the killing of 3 citizens in this bombing.

He pointed out that Israel acknowledged its mistake and took responsibility, stressing the need for such mistakes not to occur in the future.

He said that he and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have been calling on Israel for months to allow more aid into Gaza, and are drawing attention to problems that need to be solved.

He stressed that the news regarding the opening of new aid corridors and allowing aid to pass through more border gates is a happy matter.

He stressed the need to turn words into actions. Otherwise, mass starvation is a bad possibility to consider.

Stressing the importance of distributing aid, he said: “I call on representatives of humanitarian aid organizations to join the unit of the Israeli institution to coordinate government activities in the Palestinian territories, which implements aid activities in Gaza.”

Our support for Israel is conditional

The British Foreign Secretary considered that an immediate and permanent ceasefire is not possible “unless Hamas is eliminated.”

He stated that a temporary truce in the conflict could allow prisoners to leave Gaza and aid to enter the region.

According to Cameron’s opinion; If Hamas leaders leave Gaza and remove the structures they use, the problem in the area will be solved by political, not military, means.

He said: “Israel has the right to self-defense, which we must support.” Of course, our support is not unconditional, and we look forward to such a successful and proud democracy adhering to international humanitarian law.”

He added: “We cannot put our heads in our hands and wait for the end of a war that may never end. Israel, the occupying power, bears responsibilities towards the people of Gaza. But it also means that the international community must work with Israel in humanitarian efforts to keep people safe and provide them with what they need.”
