Cameroon is facing a mounting public safety and human rights crisis as authorities record a sharp surge in domestic violence and femicides. According to data released by Human Rights Watch and corroborating reports from regional coverage, a wave of lethal attacks claimed the lives of several women between August 6 and 26, with some victims killed by current or former partners in the immediate presence of their children.
Official Data and Escalating Figures
The recent violence underscores a broader, worsening trend acknowledged by Cameroon’s Ministry for the Promotion of Women and the Family, known as MINPROFF. The ministry reported 50 femicides during the first four months alone, marking a 37 percent increase in reported cases since 2023. Officials at MINPROFF have publicly warned that these documented figures represent merely the “tip of the iceberg,” noting that the actual scale of gender-based violence across the country is likely significantly higher due to underreporting, weak institutional frameworks, and entrenched social stigmas.
Femicide, defined by the United Nations as the intentional killing of women and girls with a gender-related motivation, stands as the most brutal manifestation of systemic gender inequality. In Cameroon, the persistence of discriminatory laws and chronic government underinvestment in prevention programs and survivor support systems have created a climate of limited accountability and impunity for perpetrators.
Government Pledges and Legislative Stalled Action
Despite repeated commitments from Yaoundé to address the crisis, tangible protections remain scarce. In 2022, the government adopted both a national strategy to combat gender-based violence and a comprehensive national gender policy. Furthermore, in June, Women’s Empowerment and the Family Minister Marie-Thérèse Abena Ondoa informed parliamentarians that her ministry was finalizing a legislative bill designed to establish gender-based violence as a standalone criminal offense and reinforce legal protections for women’s rights.
While a national security meeting convened by the president in August discussed the escalating number of femicide cases, these administrative steps have yet to translate into immediate, enforceable measures on the ground. Victims and survivors continue to encounter substantial barriers when attempting to secure protection orders, access adequate healthcare, or navigate the justice system.
Calls for Coordinated Intervention
Human Rights Watch has urged the Cameroonian government to rapidly bridge the gap between policy promises and practical enforcement. Rights advocates are pressing the administration to establish an inter-agency task force comprising MINPROFF, the Ministries of Justice, Defense, National Security, Territorial Administration, and Finance.
Additional recommendations emphasize the critical need to fully fund prevention initiatives, expand the network of domestic violence shelters across all regions, and deploy properly trained staff to assist survivors. Rights groups maintain that authorities must proactively remove administrative and legal hurdles facing women seeking protective measures, while ensuring the swift arrest and prosecution of offenders.
