This epidemic is currently raging in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, where nearly 150 people are believed to be affected.

Some patients present with worrying symptoms such as “the sensation of insects crawling on their skin” or loss of motor skills. In some cases, this infection results in the death of the affected person.
The cause of this disease? This could be a consequence of intensive lobster farming in the region and in particular the presence of BMAA, a neurotoxic amino acid present in these animals. This substance could be at the origin of the epidemic.
