Ottawa:Canada is proposing a new rule that allows international students to work off campus only 24 hours a week. Effective from September. This follows Tuesday’s expiration of the temporary policy allowing international students to work part-time for more than 20 hours.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government has allowed international students to work more than 20 hours a week during the Covid-19 pandemic. This also happened amid a labor shortage in the country.

Foreign students coming here should give priority to studies. Immigration Minister Matthew Miller said the 24-hour limit on working hours would allow them to focus more on their studies. Recent studies have shown that international students in the United States and Canada working more than 28 hours per week off-campus significantly affect their academic performance. As a result, the number of dropouts increases. Canada’s decision also fits into this context.

Canada is a country that gives priority to Indian students for higher education. As per 2022 estimate, there are 3.19 lakh Indian students.
