Canadian GP begins with breakdown: training canceled

A glitch in the video surveillance ended the Formula 1 opening practice session in Montreal following just a few minutes. Shortly following the start on Friday, the race control stopped the first session in Canada with a red flag for safety reasons, because apparently not all surveillance cameras on the track might be accessed. At first, the cause seemed to be the defect of Alpine pilot Pierre Gasly, who had rolled out on the track with a damaged clutch.

But even following the Frenchman’s car had been cleared of the asphalt, the pit lane on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve remained closed. The break took almost an hour of practice time off the clock. After that, the race director reported: “The delay will be longer because the video surveillance is not correctly synchronized and until the problem is solved we will not be able to drive on the track.”

A little later came the announcement that the first training would not be resumed. Instead, the start of the second practice session was brought forward by half an hour. It is now scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. CEST and last 90 minutes. Not sure if it will stay dry. The cause of the breakdown might have been a power failure.
