A Canadian woman suspected of links with the Islamic State (IS) group and repatriated from Syria in April was arrested this week near Toronto in connection with terrorism charges, Canadian police announced Friday.

Ammara Amjad was arrested Thursday in Milton, near Canada’s largest city, “for her alleged participation in the activities of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a communicated.

This 29-year-old woman was released on bail and is expected for a first appearance on November 17.

She is part of a group of four Canadian women and ten children of jihadists from the Islamic State (IS) group repatriated from Syria in early April, for the 4th operation of its kind carried out by Canadian authorities.

Since the end of the “caliphate” established by ISIS in Syria in 2019, the repatriation of women and children of jihadists from its ranks is a very sensitive issue for many countries, which fear for their public security and possible political consequences.

Thousands are still detained in camps in Syria.
