Cancer death rate continues to rise

“Cancer is a burden on families and society, with cancer morbidity and mortality rates continuing to rise,” noticed experts during “The 25e annual conference on cancer prevention in Ho Chi Minh City” organized on 1is December by the National Cancer Association and Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital.

The Dr Pham Xuân Dung, director of the Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, said cancer has been and is a burden on families and society and especially in the field of health in the world, including In Vietnam. Cancer incidence and mortality rates continue to rise. Specifically, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (Globocan) said that in 2020 there will be approximately 19.3 million new cases, 2.9 million deaths, compared to approximately 14 million new cases and 8 million deaths in 2012.

In Vietnam, in 2020, there were approximately 182,563 new cases and 122,690 cancer deaths. Vietnam ranks 91/185 in new case incidence rate and 50/185 in cancer death rate. This proves the rapid increase in cancer incidence and mortality in our countryconcluded the Dr Pham Xuan Dung.

At Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, the number of cancer patients coming for treatment each year is about 23,000 new cases. Common cancers in men include liver, lung, stomach, colorectal and prostate cancers (accounting for about 65.8% of all cancers). In women, common cancers include breast, lung, colorectal, stomach and liver cancers (accounting for approximately 59.4% of all cancers).

In recent years, health institutions have applied many modern diagnostic and treatment techniques. Surgical and radiotherapy methods are not only aimed at curing the disease, but also at improving the patient’s quality of life. Cancer patients have been able to access new chemotherapies and targeted drugs and, more recently, immunotherapy and gene therapy drugs.

The Dr Pham Xuân Dung said that the earlier the cancer is detected, the higher the cure rate and the cost of treatment drops significantly. On the contrary, if detected at a late stage, it always leaves a heavy burden of financing, and the treatment efficiency is also greatly reduced. Therefore, each person should maintain the habit of having periodic medical examinations. When there are signs of cancer, it is necessary to go to specialized departments for examinations, early detection or exclusion of cancer. the 25the annual conference on cancer prevention in Ho Chi Minh City attracted more than 1,800 delegates from cities and provinces of the country and experts from several countries and territories such as Japan, Russia, Germany and Taiwan (China) . In two days, there were 20 thematic sessions on hematology, general medicine, head and neck-thyroid, digestive, lung-thoracic, breast, gynecology, nursing-palliative care, radiotherapy- tech radiology and pathophysiology-molecular biology. In addition to specialized topics on oncology, the organizing committee also organized an international training session on “the role of new molecular biomarkers in the era of precision medicine with the participation of Japanese and Taiwanese experts.
