Canine Rabies Outbreak in Kimputu: Six Deaths and Vaccine Updates

Six people died of canine rabies between last July and August, out of regarding twenty bitten by dogs, in the health zone of Kimputu, territory of Idiofa (Kwilu).

These statistics are published by the Kwilu Provincial Health Division, which claims to have purchased the vaccines to protect survivors still under medical supervision.

The Acting Division Chief of Kwilu Province, Dr Emérence Nyoka, said that nearly 20 people were vaccinated out of the 71 doses of rabies vaccine purchased:

“We vaccinated 18 people, of which 17 people had two doses of vaccine and one person had one dose. And according to the calendar, it was necessary to take three doses of vaccine, on the first day you have the first dose, on the seventh and 21 days”.

For rabies, said Dr. Emérence Nyoka, the incubation time for rabies is up to 3 months.

He added that apart from the health zone of Kimputu, that of Vanga (Bulungu territory) also registered 5 people, bitten by dogs.

These people who have not yet shown symptoms of rabies are still under medical supervision.
