Cannabis becomes legal in Germany

On Friday, the state chamber passed a law passed by the Bundestag that would allow possession and cultivation of the drug for adults with requirements from April 1st.

Legalization was preceded by weeks of dispute. The Union-led countries in particular stubbornly opposed the law. Until recently it was unclear whether they would refer it to a mediation committee between the Bundesrat and the Bundestag. However, the necessary majority of votes in the plenary session – at least 35 of the total of 69 votes – was not achieved.

In the future, adults aged 18 and over will be allowed to carry up to 25 grams of cannabis for their own consumption and store up to 50 grams at home. Three plants are allowed for home cultivation.
