Canon continues to expand the APS-C range and presents the EOS R100, the cheapest camera with an RF bayonet to date.

Inexpensive entry into the RF system

Actually, Canon was not so badly positioned in the area of the rather cheap APS-C cameras with the EOS R10 and EOS R50, but the market leader apparently wanted to give customers an even cheaper entry into the RF system as quickly as possible. The newly introduced Canon EOS R100 should take this place, form the counterpart to the popular Canon EOS M100 or M200 from the EOS M series and at the same time act as the successor to the inexpensive entry-level DSLRs.

Two features surprise

Two features of the Canon EOS R100 surprised us at first sight. This is on the one hand electronic viewfinder with a resolution of 2.36 million pixels and on the other hand the solid built-in and non-touch-sensitive displaywhich works with a resolution of 1.04 million pixels.

I would have wagered that Canon would forego a viewfinder on the R100, just like the M200, in order to differentiate it from the more expensive models. But Canon installed an EVF and instead relied on a non-tiltable or foldable display without a touch function. In times of vlog cameras, which have been quite present in recent weeks and months, this decision is quite a surprise.

24 megapixels, 4K videos and Dual Pixel AF

The APS-C sensor of the Canon EOS R100 works with a resolution of 24 megapixels and is flanked by the DIGIC 8 processor. The dual-pixel autofocus including face and eye recognition should ensure fast focusing, but the maximum continuous shooting speed is a little less fast, at 3.5 frames per second with AF tracking and 6.5 frames per second without AF tracking lies.

The Canon EOS R100 records videos in a maximum of 4K with 25 frames per second, but the full sensor should not be read out. In Full HD 60 fps are possible, in HD also 120 fps. There is a connection for an external microphone, and there is also a micro-HDMI interface, a cable remote control connection, USB, Bluetooth and WLAN. Canon has also given the camera a small pop-up flash.

The weight of the Canon EOS R100 is 356 grams and the dimensions are given as 116.3 x 88.1 x 58.7 mm.

price and availability

From the end of June 2023, the Canon EOS R100 will be available in a kit with the RF-S 18-45mm IS STM at a price of 699 euros. If you also want to own the RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, you have to budget 929 euros. There doesn’t seem to be a purchase option just for the case.

Incidentally, in addition to the EOS R100, Canon also introduced a new RF 28mm f/2.8, which is also suitable for full-frame cameras.
