Canon Inc., a major Japanese semiconductor equipment manufacturer, revealed that the newly launched “Nano-imprint Lithography (NIL)” lithography equipment is only a fraction of the best machine from leading manufacturer ASML Holding NV. one.
Bloomberg 5threport, Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai said in an interview that the latest NIL technology gives small semiconductor factories the opportunity to produce advanced chips that are currently almost exclusively occupied by large companies. He said, “The price of the machine will be one digit less than ASML’s extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment.” However, the final price has not been finalized yet.
Mitarai said Canon may not be able to sell its equipment to China. “As far as I understand, technologies below 14 nanometers are banned, so I don’t think they can be sold.” He also said that NIL equipment requires only one-tenth of the power required by EUV machines; although NIL should be difficult to replace EUV, but I believe this can create new opportunities and needs, and many customers have come to inquire.
