Capitec & Standard Bank Launch Smart ID Services at 34 New Branches in SA

South Africans now have more convenient access to Smart ID cards thanks to a new partnership between the Department of Home Affairs and several major banks. The rollout, which began this week, is already exceeding expectations, with 34 bank branches across the country now offering Smart ID services – more than double the initial target.

The initiative aims to alleviate pressure on traditional Home Affairs offices and streamline the application process for citizens. Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, highlighted the significance of this expansion, noting that it includes the first-ever availability of Smart ID services in the Free State and North West provinces. This marks a substantial step towards improving access to essential documentation for all South Africans.

Capitec has taken a leading role in the rollout, establishing 30 branches offering the service, surpassing its initial goal of 13. The bank’s extensive branch network, the largest in South Africa, is particularly focused on reaching underserved areas, especially in rural communities where access to Home Affairs services has historically been limited. Standard Bank has too expanded the service to four additional branches, building on its existing pilot program.

This expansion builds on a decade-long effort by Home Affairs to offer Smart ID and passport services through banks, initially through a pilot program requiring seconded staff. Last year, a new system was implemented granting banks direct access to Home Affairs systems via a secure Digital API Gateway, enabling independent service delivery.

Expanded Access and Bank Participation

Several banks have signed on to participate in the expanded initiative, including African Bank and TymeBank, in addition to Capitec and Standard Bank. The Department of Home Affairs initially aimed for 17 branches to travel live this week, but quickly surpassed that goal, achieving a 10% increase in service footprint within just three days, according to Minister Schreiber. FNB, Nedbank, Absa, Tymebank, Discovery Bank and African Bank are slated to follow suit in the coming weeks and months.

Future Expansion and Digital Integration

The Department of Home Affairs is committed to expanding the service to 100 bank branches by the end of March 2026, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,000 branches. Capitec plans to further enhance accessibility by launching self-help terminals at more branches, aiming for 100 branches equipped with this technology by mid-2026. FNB has also completed testing and intends to scale the service to over 240 branches within the next year, adding branches on a weekly basis. Beyond bank branches, Home Affairs is exploring the potential of integrating these services into banking apps, further leveraging the digital capabilities of the financial sector.

The successful launch and rapid expansion of this initiative represent a significant step towards modernizing access to essential government services in South Africa. As more banks join the program and digital integration progresses, citizens can expect even greater convenience and efficiency in obtaining their Smart ID cards.
