Boston Councilmember Kendra Lara and her seven-year-old son Zaire were involved in a car accident in Jamaica Plain last Friday while her license was revoked and she was driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.

According to the report offered by the Boston Police Department, shared with NBC10 Boston on Saturday, it indicates that the Dominican councilwoman hit a fence, then a house on Center Street, “causing significant damage.” The report specified that the driver was behind the wheel of an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with a revoked license.

In addition, according to police, the child was not secured in a booster seat as required for children under 8 years of age or under 57 inches. “As a result, a 51A report was filed for negligence and failure to use a proper car seat for the safety of the child,” the brief explained.

These types of reports must be filed with the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families if a person is accused of child abuse or neglect, which was confirmed by the institution’s spokesperson, adding that they are conducting a investigation.

For her part, authorities say Lara told them she was driving on Center Street when another car stopped in front of her, which is why she swerved to avoid hitting it and was unable to brake fast enough to stop before hitting the house.

The driver involved in the accident is expected to be cited in West Roxbury court for operation of a motor vehicle after suspension, operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, and operation of a motor vehicle without insurance.

Regarding the state of health of those involved, Councilor Kendra Lara’s chief of staff confirmed to NBC10 Boston that both she and her son are expected to be fine.

Lara represents the city’s Sixth Ward, which includes Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury, and was elected in 2021. Her city bio says she is the first person of color to represent the ward.
