The Theological Response to Geopolitical Pressure
Taybeh sits at a fragile crossroads. An Israeli military order recently designated the neighboring area of Rimon and Taybeh as a closed military zone, ratcheting up pressure on the enclave. Against this backdrop, Cardinal Pizzaballa addressed local believers during the solemnity of the Assumption. Commenting on the biblical text from the Book of Revelation regarding the woman and the dragon, he acknowledged that “the dragon, the male, is very powerful,” but insisted it cannot ultimately prevail over the church and the generation of life.
“Forse non ho risposte a livello umano e terreno, ma credo in Dio. E sono certo che, in Lui, possiamo continuare a generare vita, anche qui a Taybeh,” Pizzaballa stated during the liturgy, reinforcing his pledge that church leadership will continue to do everything within its power to protect the ecclesial footprint throughout the Holy Land.
Guarding the Heart Against Resignation
The Latin Patriarch emphasized that spiritual endurance requires active mental defense against despair. In a community facing tight movement restrictions and military boundaries, psychological resilience is just as vital as physical infrastructure.
“Dobbiamo imparare dalla Vergine Maria come custodire i nostri cuori, perché questa situazione può contaminarli. E se i nostri cuori vengono contaminati, il drago ha vinto,” Pizzaballa warned the congregation. He called on parishioners to stay anchored in faith rather than human despair, urging them not to abandon their inherent rights to life and presence.
The Ground Reality in Taybeh and Rimon
The pastoral visit highlights growing concern over the isolation of Taybeh. The village remains under the spiritual care of parish priest Father Bashar Fawadleh, with whom the Latin Patriarch maintains constant contact to monitor developments on the ground.
“Il vostro esempio è importante, affinché continuiamo a essere una voce cristiana nel mezzo di questa situazione molto complessa,” Pizzaballa noted, stressing that the steadfastness of Taybeh’s inhabitants serves as a vital anchor for the broader Christian minority across the West Bank.
