Cargo ship carrying 1,100 Porsches and 189 Bentleys caught fire off Portugal

A freighter with 1,100 Porches and 189 Bentleys on board caught fire off the Azores. The ship is adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, writes the New York Times.

According to the American newspaper, the ship Felicity Ace was en route from the German port of Emden to Davisville in the United States. More than 300 km off the coast of the Azores, the ship ran into difficulties when a fire broke out, following which the entire crew was evacuated. Dramatic footage from the Portuguese Coastguard shows how crew members were evacuated by helicopter from the burning ship, which was nearly 200 meters long. No one was injured during this “physically demanding” operation. It is not yet known whether the cargo can be salvaged. According to the New York Times, Volkswagen has confirmed that there are 4,000 vehicles on board the ship. A spokesperson for the American branch of Porsche confirmed that 1,100 Porches were affected and “the fate of the vehicles is unknown”.
