SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico.— Leaders of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) agreed on Sunday to postpone their forty-seventh annual summit, which was to be held from next Wednesday to Friday in Granadadue to the passage through the region of huracán “Beryl”category 4.
“The meetings that were scheduled to take place in Grenada this week will be postponed to a date to be determined. The main objective of the entire Community is to prepare for the impact of the hurricane and to protect the safety of the population,” said a senior Caricom official.
This decision was made following it was learned that Hurricane Beryl had strengthened to Category 4 and will pass south of Barbados early Sunday night, through Saint Vincent and the Grenadines during the night and then through Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago.
From there, its expected path will be through Haiti, Jamaica and Belize by the end of the week.
In a statement, Caricom also urged the population of countries in the path of the hurricane to “take all necessary protective measures.”
“The community stands ready to support member states affected by this dangerous hurricane,” the document said.
Caricom members are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
