The Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2) bought the last ticket for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in Turin. He achieved this with a 6:4, 6:4 win against the Russian Daniil Medvedev (ATP 3), who had already qualified for the round of the last four.
Alcaraz, who is taking part in the ATP Finals for the first time, will face Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1 and defending champion, on Saturday. In the other semi-final there will be a duel between the Italian Jannik Sinner (ATP 4) and Medvedev. All semi-finalists are among the top 4 in the world.
Impressive performance from Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz dispelled any doubts about his form with a brilliant performance in his final game in the red group. Although Medvedev also showed impressive tennis, Alcaraz managed to achieve decisive service breakthroughs in every set.
In the first set, his opponent seemed a little more confident at the beginning until the 20-year-old played four fantastic points for the first break when the score was 3:3. With the score at 4:4 in the second set, Alcaraz struck again when some errors from Medvedev helped him achieve a service breakthrough. He then completed the victory in a confident manner.
“I had to stay mentally strong, I struggled a little with my serve and his return game is incredible,” said Alcaraz on the court. “But I stayed calm and strong.” Now there is a giant duel with Djokovic. It will be the Spaniard’s first meeting with the Serbian since his defeat in the Cincinnati final in August.
