London: The retirement strategy of Ravichandran Ashwin and the Rajasthan Royals to field Ryan Parag in the IPL was remarkable. Rajasthan’s strategy was in the final overs of the match against Lucknow Super Giants. At first, even Shimron Hetmeyer, who was with Ashwin at the crease at the time, was shocked, but only later realized that it was a ploy.

Now that strategy has been applied twice in a game. Fans are now once again witnessing the Retired Out at the T20 Blast in England. Retired out is a team strategy in which the batsman returns to the pavilion himself without having to run to another player on the team.

During the Nottinghamshire – Birmingham Bears match last night, the players of both teams left the crease with similar tactics. Birmingham Bears captain Carlos Brathwaite and opposing batsman Samit Patel have retired in the death overs. This kind of strategy was repeated in a match that was cut short by rain.

In the fifth over, Brathwaite hit 17 off 11 balls, including two fours and a six. However, Brathwaite retired at the end of the seventh over as the team reached 80-4. Substitute Sam Hein did not face a single ball.

Nottinghamshire batted 15 for victory in the last over before Samit Patel returned with two runs off two balls. Substitute Tom Moores hit a six but Nottinghamshire lost by one run.
