Carlos Ruiz receives a special image from the MLS for his legacy in the league

The MLS premiered its season this February 21 with the duel between Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Real Salt Lake at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. On the occasion of commemorating the start of its 29th season, the official account of The most important soccer league in the United States released a publication full of nostalgia, as they remembered their MVPs (most valuable players) throughout history.

It was in that publication that the name of a well-known Guatemalan football player appeared. Carlos the “pescadito” Ruiz, one of the most recognized soccer players in the country and top scorer of the National Team, appeared on the select MLS list.

And it is not surprising, since Carlos Ruiz left an indelible mark on American soccer since he defended the colors of teams such as FC Dallas, Toronto FC, DC United and the LA Galaxy, giving the latter its first title in history.

It was on October 20, 2002 that the “Pescado” shone at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts against the New England Revolution since scored the historic goal in the 112th minute which ended with the trophy in the possession of the Los Angeles team.

This milestone ended with Carlos Ruiz winning the MVP of the MLS season, being recognized as the most valuable player. In addition to the title goal, Ruiz also scored 24 goals throughout the campaign, a record amount that was not broken until 2012.

Carlos Ruiz currently works as a sports commentator for Apple TV, a payment platform that is responsible for broadcasting all regular season games and playoffs of the MLS.

With 68 goals in 139 appearances with the Guatemalan National Team, Carlos Humberto Ruiz maintains the record of being the Bicolor’s all-time top scorer.

His last game with the national jersey took place on September 6, 2016 for the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. In that duel the Bicolor won 9-3 against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, five of those goals were from Carlos Ruiz.
