Carol Gay Collection celebrates bold and experimental materials

“With so much seeing, we trivialize looking – seeing… not seeing. Try seeing, for the first time, what you see every day, without seeing it.” The words of the poem “See seeing”, written by poet Otto Lara Resende, sum up well the inspirations of architect and designer Carol Gay, in her co-creation with Decortiles in 2024.

The self-titled collection brings a modern language in contrast to the natural beauty and the frenetic pace of contemporary life in metropolises like São Paulo. Reinterpreted in an authorial way, this fusion of ideas celebrates the organic and symmetrical forms found in bold and unique materials.

Carol Gay explores creative thinking in pieces that speak to Decortiles’ disruptive and avant-garde aesthetic. The explosion of colors, shapes and textures convey the identity of her creations as a designer. “I look for this perspective, analyzing not only the form, but also how it can transform the pieces. The piece doesn’t end there with the finished material, it goes beyond”, comments the architect and designer.

In the five series that make up the collection, Carol Gay is inspired by the geometric complexity of urban features; in the organic and natural forms of the biophilic movement; in the recovery of artisanal techniques; in affective technologies and the volume of products that reveal unique and surprising surfaces.

In the Bola series, retro shapes are highlighted. They are inspired by the works of Tarsila do Amaral, Yayoi Kusama and Athos Bulcão, which are artistic references from his training, but also inspired by the Bola vase – an iconic piece from his blown glass collection. The coverings have saturated colors and spherical shapes that allow free layout for a modern and maximalist effect.

For the Traço series, the architect’s attentive look redefined the frenetic movements of the asphalt and urban elements. Objects such as manholes and storm drains, which often go unnoticed by the eye, inspired the concept behind the collection. The reliefs of the cities are marked in crossed lines with an affective color palette and an urban design. The pieces, in addition to being modern, maximize the touch experience due to their artistic relief.

For the Lascas series, another release from the Carol Gay collection, the digital world is left aside to make way for a more genuine creation, where manual work takes center stage. The surface is a rescue of the rustic, the beauty of the textures, the designed reliefs and the effects that value each piece as unique and individual.

United to the fertile soil of cosmopolitan cities, Raízes reinterprets the search for natural well-being in a busy life. Sensory comfort and biophilic reliefs provide an organic and sinuous design – an ode to the material purity and delicacy found in contemporary brutalism.

Between aesthetic contrasts and natural references, the poetry in the Carol Gay collection reveals the magnitude of particular traits in her work for a creation with a closer look. It is to awaken the curiosity that can be observed in everything that surrounds us.
