Premiering on Prime Video, two distinct television series—Carrie and Crystal Lake—revisit foundational horror classics by focusing intensely on the complex archetype of the mother. These adaptations trace their lineage directly back to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psicosis, which established the mother as an unavoidable figure in the genre and served as the germ for subgenres like the giallo and the slasher. In this same vein, Brian De Palma’s 1976 film Carrie and the 1980 film Martes 13 featured psychopathic mothers raising children, setting the stage for the current television recreations. Martes 13 was an opportunistic and uncomplex film prompted by the movie of another Hitchcockian disciple, John Carpenter, with Halloween (1978).
Carrie on Prime Video
The eight-episode series Carrie is an original creation by Mike Flanagan, with direction by Flanagan, Kyra Sedgwick, and Kate Siegel, starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie, alongside Samantha Sloyan, Alison Thornton, and Matthew Lillard. Departing from Piper Laurie’s portrayal of a religious fanatic in the original adaptation of Stephen King’s book, Flanagan offers a pasteurized characterization where the mother, played by Samantha Sloyan, provides rational arguments to school authorities.

In this version, Carrie navigates affection and anger toward her mother and friends after her father’s death acts as the symbolic fall that sparks the story. Flanagan incorporates contemporary elements such as social media—a divided reality of hostility and ridicule where adults are equally unprepared—turning Carrie into a scapegoat. The narrative culminates in telekinesis, tying into witchcraft, superhero cinema, and franchises in the final chapters, while preserving the image of a mistreated girl asking her mother for help amidst unbearable pain.
Crystal Lake Adaptations
Running for eight episodes and produced by A24, Crystal Lake is created by Brad Kane, who is also responsible for Welcome to Derry. The series is directed by Logan George, Celine Held, and Michael Lennox, and features an interpreting cast consisting of Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, and Cameron Scoggins.
Crystal Lake is a total discovery, presenting the initial steps in the murderous career of Pam, featuring justified stabbings dedicated to watching over the integrity of her son, even though he drowned and his body was never found.
