The corona pandemic has changed the payment behavior of Austrians. Especially at the beginning of the pandemic, cash was discouraged – so many people switched to cashless payments by card or cell phone. “Young people are also driving the market forward,” says Mario Mathera, Managing Director for Austria and Germany at GlobalPayments. But card payment is not yet common in Austria. Especially in the service sector – small hairdressers, in doctor’s offices or even at the therapeutic masseur who comes home – can often only be paid in cash.
